Ubuntu: eth0 only comes up when manually running "ifup eth0".

Message:

I am in the process of setting up a Linux "box" for Java-stuff, and I
have now installed Ubuntu 5.10 in the server version where I was a bit
baffled by the lack of connectivity, but found that a manual "ifup eth0"
after logging in as root gave what I needed.

A reinstall without the virtual netcard as suggested on the
vpc.visualwin.com site did not help when I reenabled it. I do not have
anything but the basic server functionality installed, so anything
requiring me to use some GUI-tool will not work for me.

I can install XP just fine (which I also need) but this I would
appreciate a pointer for.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help.
