Networking problem - revisited

Message:

Further to my network problem described below, I thought I'd start again
from scratch in case something had got corrupted. Now I have exactly the
same problem out of the box - the guest os (XP Pro SP2) has nothing in the
"network connections" box. When I created the new VM, I selected the
physical network card before I started installing the guest OS. During the
installation XP detected the card as a 21140, and I chose to have a static
IP address and gave it one that's not on our LAN. But when I restarted the
VM after the installation completed, I had no network connections.

I'm only doing this to get around someone elses problem (that is, I cannot
download a full Cygwin installation and put it on a machine, I have to
download and use their "setup.exe" which downloads required components from
the Internet, and I need it for a development project on a machine that is
not connected to the Internet) and I've wasted a week (on and off) so far.

There's got to be something basic I'm missing.

Mike.
