Networking problem

Message:

I am having problems getting the XP Pro guest OS to connect to the Internet
and I was hoping someone could advise what the problem might be. Setup is
this:

Host machine: Dell P4, XP Pro SP2, MS VPC version 5.3.582.27
IP address 192.168.87.2/24 (along with some other IP addresses on other
networks mainly for router configs etc.)
Gateway 192.168.87.10 (LAN address of our ADSL router).

Guest OS: XP Pro SP2, static IP of 192.168.87.246/24

I have marked VPC as an exclusion in the firewall on the host PC, and
disabled the firewall on the guest OS. I initially set the guest to use
Shared Networking and it didn't see the Internet. I changed it to "3Com
10/100 NIC" which is the physical NIC in the host machine, and for a while
it was fine. It sat for several hours downloading something, then lost the
connection. I thought nothing of it, shut down the VM and went home. Next
day, the machine cannot see the Internet again.

I have tried switching the network options between "local only", shared and
the physical NIC. Sometimes the guest os has a network connection, sometimes
it doesn't. I cannot make it see the Internet any more though.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Mike.
