I have set up a test network of virtual machines, including a domain
controller, web/sharepoint server, and a client machine running XP. My host
is XP, and I would like to allow access to the host from the virtual machines
and vice versa. I would also like my virtual machines to be able to connect
to the internet through the host network adapter. What is the best method
for acheiving this configuration? thanks!

As far as routing is concerned, a virtual network is just the same as a
physical network. To connect it to another subnet you use a router. The
setup you would use is similar to the setup used to link a second physical
segment/subnet to an existing network with Internet access.

Give one of your virtual machines (preferably not the DC) two NICs, one
in the virtual network and one linked to the host's physical NIC. If it is a
server you can use RRAS. If its a Windows workstation you will need to
enable IP routing some other way.

The same rules apply as with any two subnets linked by a router. You may
need extra routing on your LAN Internet router to allow the virtual network
to access the LAN machines and the Internet. (The Internet router needs to
know how to reach the "internal" subnet via the internal router).
