Differencing VHD problem

Message:

I'm receiving an error... "The virtual hard disk's parent appears to
have been modified without using the differencing virtual hard disk."

History: I installed WinXP SP2 guest, installed the additions,
defragged, zero'd, and compacted the VHD. I then set the VHD files
readonly and enable NTFS compression.

Next, I created two VPCs, each using their own VHD in differencing mode,
linking to the same parent. Both VPCs also have Undo disks enabled (I
usually commit the changes once every day or two)

As of this morning, one of the VPCs is reporting the above error, the
other is not. In addition, after shutting down and attempting to commit
changes, I receive the following error:

> Virtual PC was unable to commit the changes made during this session.
>
> A likely cause of this problem is lack of free hard disk space on your physical computer. Your changes are not lost. However, the next time you start this virtual machine, you will be asked if you wish to keep the changes you have made or delete them.

I compared the timestamps, CRC32 and MD5 hashes of the parent VHD with
the backup of the same file (which was created on the installation date)

Is this likely a case of the differencing VHD being corrupt in some way?
Anything I can do to fix the differencing VHD or should I just backup
my files a rebuild the VPC/VHD?
