I have two Win XP Pro SP2 VM's. Host is also Win XP Pro SP2. All 3 fully
updated.

I am behind a router, set up so that all physical machines connected to the
router get an IP address in the range 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.150.

When I have both VM's on at the same time, they are both getting the same IP
Address 192.168.1.103. Shouldn't each VM have it's own IP address? I
realize that I could just set up each to use a unique static IP address
instead of letting the router provide the IP address, but I'm wondering if
it's normal for both VM's to be assigned the same IP address?

No, they aren't clones of each other, they were created separately with their
own installs of XP, probably a month or so apart. And each has some
different software, etc. Both have unique licenses or keys or whatever they
are called.

But, now that you mention it, because of some kind of incompatibility of VPC
with my nforce3 chipsets onboard NIC, I have to paste in the "<ethernet
adapter>" portion of the vmc file from a previously working vmc file to get
the NIC to start properly in XP. Otherwise, I have to use Shared
Networking.... I posted about that here a while back, a search should bring
up that history.

So is that how it gets the "MAC address"? How do I tell if they are the
same, and if they are, how do I change one of them?

I just checked, and yes, both virtual NIC's have the same mac address.... If
that's not supposed to be the case, then I'm sure it has something to do with
the bug in VPC that I posted about previously. The one where the onboard
nforce3 nic of the host does not get set up correctly to work with the VM,
unless I paste in the fix to the vmc file myself.

Ok, pardon me for being a little slow...

Both VM's have the following line in their VMC file:

<ethernet_card_address type="bytes">0003FFF91F71</ethernet_card_address>

First I tried replacing that line with the following two lines:

<ethernet_card_address type="bytes">000*********</ethernet_card_address>
<is_dynamic_assignment type="boolean">true</is_dynamic_assignment>

But that did not work. No network/internet access at all, in fact no IP
address being assigned to the VM.
So next I just changed one of the two VM's to use a MAC address of
0003FFF91F72 instead of 0003FFF91F71. This did the trick of getting the
router to assign unique IP addresses.

Do you think that's an acceptable workaround? I just need to remember to
bump up the mac address number everytime I install a new VM....?

No, deleting the mac address from the vmc file and starting again didn't work
either - no IP address is assigned and therefore no network.

So, I just changed the mac address manually by one number. Working good
now. Thanks very much for pointing me in the right direction on all this.

That's the way it's supposed to work. But, it doesn't work that way when the
host NIC is the nforce3 nvidia chipset's onboard NIC. For whatever reason,
VPC does not like this host NIC and does not include the mac address in the
vmc file.
You have to add the MAC address manually to the vmc file, otherwise the
virtual NIC won't start and no internet access.
There are several posts in this forum regarding this problem, I can only
hope MS has picked up on it and plans a patch or something.
