Good day,

I currently have 3 virtual machines installed on my box.
i have 2 XP clients and 1 win2003 server
My physical computer is on a 2003 network already so the 3 virtual machines
use "local" to network and it all works fine the 2 XP clients have joined
the virtual 2003 servers domain and im happy.

Now id like to install another copy of virtual PC on another computer on my
physical network and install an XP virtual machine i would then like that
virtual machine to be able to join my virtual domain on my computer, now i
dont think this is possible as i have selected local as my networking
option.

If i use my actual network adapter it will probably cause some dhcp issues
im sure as both my physical server and the virtual server are dhcp servers
so on a LAN with 2 seperate pc's whats the best way of networking a virtual
XP box to a virtual win Server 2003 on another machine?

setup to use.

You have a physical network which uses DHCP and this is wot your host
computers are running on, Virtual Pc uses NAT even when you use local as your
networking option(i wont go into any details of how NAT works). Basically
when you select local, you force the guest operating systems to only run
under the one domain or workgroup which is totally self contained from the
actual physical network that you host computers are running on.

What you need to do is either use you virtual server to create a domain that
only the virtual images will use, or add all the virtual guest to the same
workgroup I.E VPC.

So you then end up with two networks, one for the host computers and one for
the virtual guest o.s By selecting the local option as you have done, you
will be able to run two servers. The virtual server will ONLY communicate
with the virtual guest O.S as long as local is selected

Let's get the scenario right. You have a group of virtual machines
running as a domain in local only on one host. You now set up another group
of vms running in local only on a different host. Is that correct?

This is exactly the same as having a home office and a branch office
running on separate LANs. To link them you would use the same techniques as
for a home office/branch office linkup. The only difference is that you are
linking through your local LAN instead of through the Internet.

So you can use one domain, one domain and one workgroup, two domains or
whatever. To keep your virtual network isolated from your physical network
you would use the same techniques as you use to protect your site to site
link isolated from the Internet. If that is the scenario you are trying to
emulate, think site-to-site VPN.

It can work, but it isn't straight-forward. There is no connection
between the two local LANs. You would need to set up a routing device in
each local LAN, and use that to route traffic between them.

If you want to keep them completely isolated from your "real" LAN, the
best approach would be to use VPN to tunnel through the "real" LAN. Check
windows server help for "router to router VPN". As I said earlier, it is a
similar scenario to linking two sites through the Internet. Before you ask,
yes I have done this using virtual Server 2003 RRAS routers to link an
virtual AD client on one workstation host to a a virtual DC running on a
different host machine.

If security isn't important, you could just route the traffic through
the physical LAN. The router machines would have one NIC set to local and
one NIC set to the physical NIC of the host. You could use a Windows or
Linux virtual machine as the router. The traffic would simply be routed
unencrypted through the physical LAN.
