i've installed w2k3 as a guest OS in VPC in a PC with two network cards.
The host OS is XP (192.168.1.150)
W2k3 is the DC of a new domain with IP 192.168.25.x.
I also configured it as a router to 192.168.1.x.

192.168.1.x --------------- DC+DHCP+Router ------------------ 192.168.25.x
1.151 25.1

I left blank the default gateway in both interfaces.
I enabled RRAS in w2k3.
I modified the registry IPEnableRouter=1 in W2k3 (i.e.,the guest OS)

In the PC's of 192.168.25.x I configured the default gateway to be
192.168.25.1
In the PC's of 192.168.1.x I configured the default gateway to be
192.168.1.151

1) One problem is:
The DC can ping PC's at both subnets, but PC's on 25.x cannot ping PC's on
1.x and viceversa.

I don't know which is the problem, ....

- Maybe is that I need to put IPEnableRouter=1 also in the host OS (i.e. XP) ?

2) The second problem is in fact still a doubt.
I intend to instal Etherreal in the guest OS to analyze the packets.
Of course I need to be administrator to execute etherreal in the guest OS,
but also in the host OS?

I log in XP with a normal user.
Execute W2k3 under VPC
Log into W2k3 as administrator
Execute Etherreal
Will etherreal work?

The dg of VPC clients at 25.x is 25.1.
But ping from e.g. 25.3 to 1.x (apart from 151) times out.

And your comments are:

- I don't need to allow IP forwarding in w2k3 (the guest OS in VPC) because
RRAS is enabled.
- I must enable IP forwarding in XP Pro (the host OS of the DC at 25.1)

Is it correct?
And about the ethereal question, can you tell me anything?

If you enable RRAS as a LAN router you do not need to change the
registry setting. RRAS does that for you. You really only need to do that in
Pro, which doesn't have RRAS. You do not need to change anything on the
clients.

From what I can see, this should work. It is very similar to a setup I
have run to route between a LAN and a virtual network. Check that it is in
fact set up like this.

LAN clients
192.168.1.x dg 192.168.1.151
|
192.168.1.151 dg blank (VPC console setting "real" NIC)
RRAS router
192.168.25.1 dg blank (VPC console setting local only)
|
VPC clients
192.168.25.x dg 192.168.25.1 (VPC console setting local

Sorry for the confusion. The first two sentences were just general
comment on IP routing. If you use Pro as a router, you need to enable IP
routing in the registry. If you are using a server, enabling RRAS as a LAN
router does this for you.

The third sentence does refer to your situation. You do not need to
enable IP routing on any client machines, only on the router.

The important thing is the default gateway setting on the "real"
machines in the 192.168.1.0 network. For routing to work, both sides must
have a route to the "other" subnet via the router. If the default gateway of
machines in 192.168.1.0 is set to 192.168.1.151 (the "virtual" router) it
should work. If it doesn't, IP routing is probably not working properly. Try
disabling RRAS, then reconfigure it as a LAN router only. Also check that it
is not a firewall issue.

I have not used Ethereal in a case like this, but the Windows network
monitor works fine, so I can't see why Ethereal would not.

One more general comment. It is not recommended to use a domain
controller as a router. It can cause odd problems with name resolution and
especially browsing. I would recommend using one of the other virtual
machines as the router. As discussed above, XP Pro will do the job if you
set IP routing on in the registry.

Actually, my two questions are very related, so maybe you can shed some
light on both.

Let's focus on this case:

1 PC
Host OS: XP Pro (logged as normal user)
Guest OS: W2k3 (logged as administrator) executed in VPC

Can I enable LAN routing in the guest OS (W2k3) without having to enable IP
routing (in the registry) in the host OS (XP)?

Can I sniff packets from the guest OS, if I have no permissions to do it in
the host OS?

Summarizing, may I have permissions over the virtual adapter of VPC which I
don't have over the real adapter?

The guest and host act as two completely independent machines. Changes
you make in one OS (such as enabling IP routing) have no effect on the other
machine.

Similarly, what you see with a network monitor has nothing to do with
permissions. You are looking at the raw data on the line.

If you are asking "Will the network monitor see packets going to both
the host and the guest", I don't really know. I suspect it depends on what
you ask it to do.

When you run a packet sniffer on the guest, you will not be able to see
traffic destined for the host, regardless of your permissions. Even if you
are admin on both systems you will not see the traffic.

Even more: When you run a packet sniffer on the *host*, you will not be able
to see traffic destined for the *guest*, even if you are admin on both. (!)
Virtual Machine Network Services intercepts the packets and shunts them off
to the guest even before Ethereal gets to see them. Surprising, but that's
how it works.
