We are currently imaging laptops running xp sp2 with vpc 2004 installed and
the nortel VPN client - after installing the vpn client the machines "forget"
their NIC and no longer detect IP addresses on the LAN - it requires a
uninstall and re-install of the VPN client to get them to function properly
again...we've also found that capturing a syspreped image after doing this
makes no difference and we experience the same behaviour. wierd. its like
sysprep with VPC removes the guest NIC..

The resolution appears to be to remove the Virtual Machine Network Service
before imaging the machine. After removing the service and restoring the new
image with all the original software we did not experience any further
issues.
I believe I was sold a red herring wth the Nortel client. After restoring
the image the Virtual Machine networking service is re-installed
automatically and no longer interferes with NIC behaviour
