VPC hangs periodically

I am running VPC 2004 trial version with VM additions
- host = W2K prof. SP4, guest = W2K server SP4
- pc = athlon XP1800, 1GB ram - (have tried 400-700MB assigned to guest)
VPC installed ok and runs, excpet that it freezes (mouse stops moving)
for several seconds (about 6-10 sec),
then works again for several seconds (about 6-10 sec).
i tried disabling anti-virus real-time scan (PC-cillin) but didnt help

it does this all the time - is there a fix?
i cannot install SP1 on trial version, but want to be sure it will work
before purchasing!

tnx for reply
runnig on laptop - set power options for "always on" when on ac power
and selected "maximum performance"
completely fixed the problem

Most of the time I see this it's because of power management. (but usually
Intel chips) I don't really know what else it could be.

Maybe checking the bios setting -- sometimes the power management software
doesn't show the same things.
