I know MS Virtual PC does not work very well with pcmcia cards. I do,
however, need a virtual pc to access a smart card through a pcmcia-smart
card reader. Is there a way to do this?

Not directly, but supposedly there's a way to use "Remote Desktop
Connection" to access the VM that allows sharing a smart card reader. (I
don't have a smart card reader to test with.)

vmware does have USB support, but it's been problematic. (it might work for
you in other words)

Unfortunately not, I've never used a smartcard reader. I don't think you can
have the VPN open from more than one host at the time, so you couldn't have
it open with the host at the same time as you are trying with the VM.

You should try asking the vmware people otherwise.
