Is there a workaround for Nvidia Nforce3 NIC?

I just got VPC 2004 SP1 and have tried a couple of times to install XP on a
VM. However, the software appears not to be compatible with my onboard
network adapter. I get this message:
The network adapter with address "00:00:00:00:00:00" of virtual machine
failed to initialize because the address is a null address.

And in Device Manager of the Guest OS, the emulated NIC has a exclamation
point and it says the device won't start.

I saw an earlier thread where this was reported but there was no resolution
that I could find.

The host is XP2 Pro, Mobo is MSI K8N Neo Platinum. Using latest Nvidia
Nforce drivers 5.10.

First, make sure that the you have the latest drivers for the card.

Next, using REGEDIT:

1. Examine the key value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}\<nnnn>\DriverDesc
to locate the desired host adapter where <nnnn> is a four digit number.
2. Look at the GUID value for the NetCfgInstanceId key value.
3. Add the DWORD key at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VPCNetS2\Parameters\Adapters\<guid>\Flags
and set the value to 1 where <guid> is the GUID found in step 2.
4. Restart the computer.

This should resolve the problem.

Still no luck!

I tried to do a complete uninstall and reinstall of Virtual PC. First I
installed the boxed VPC 2004 as is (no service pack). For some reason, this
second time around I did not get the error message about the network services
driver. But just in case, I went to the Utility folder, ran Install.bat,
rebooted, ran Remove.bat, rebooted, and then ran install.bat again and
rebooted. Next I created the Virtual Machine. This time, I did NOT get the
following error message that I was getting prior to the uninstall/reinstall:

"The network adapter with address "00:00:00:00:00:00" of virtual machine
failed to initialize because the address is a null address."

I got excited and thought, ok it's fixed. So next I installed VPC Service
Pack 1. I had not installed any Guest OS's yet. I started the Virtual
Machine and still did not get the error message. I took this as a good sign

However, upon installing WinXP Pro (through to SP2) on the virtual machine,
the NIC still shows in Device Manager with an exclamation point, says not
started, and there is no internet access. To get internet access, I have to
switch the settings for the VM to Shared (NAT) or whatever.

FYI, SP1 deletes Install.bat and Remove.bat, so those are not an option
anymore unless I do another full reinstall without SP1.

Any more ideas?

I had the same problem on another NIC. I found one line is missing in the
vmc file when a new vm is created:

<ethernet_card_address
type="bytes">000XXXXXXXXX</ethernet_card_address>

I is located in the <ethernet_controller...> element.

I don't know how I managed to have it added in a vmc file, but now that I've
got it, I just copy it to any new vmc file, and it works perfectly.

It doesn't matter where I add that line, the NIC still won't start. Device
Manager shows it with an exclamation point. The emulated network card can't
use the physical adapter for some reason. I tried putting that line where
you mentioned, as well as a few more locations, and kept trying but each time
same result, NIC won't start. But thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate
that at least someone has tried to help :)

That did it! You're great for helping, thank you very much.
After I made the change you suggested, the NIC came on no problem, and that
blasted exclamation point was gone. And I could tell it was trying to make
internet access because the ZA free icon would flash. So next I added the
VM's new IP address to my Host PC's ZA Trusted Zone, and Wah-lah, internet
access with the VM having it's own IP address. I'm behind a router/firewall
by the way.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to say thank you...

I was having the exact same problem with my Nvidea Nforce 3 NIC, pulling my
hair out trying to get it to work.

I added the following line to the .vmc file right under </virtual_network>
and everything works great now.

<ethernet_card_address type="bytes">0003FFF91F71</ethernet_card_address>

What's odd is that I had this line missing on some of my VM's but others
were fine even though they were configured exactly the same with the same
network settings.

It would be nice to get a hotfix for this issue so I didn't have to keep
adding that line in eveytime a create a new VM, but hey it least it works now
:)
