Cannot boot XP CD to install OS (Newbie)

I am running WINXP sp1a on a HPnx9110 notebook, have installed Virtual PC
2004 sp1.
When I boot a retail XP PRo sp2 to install the OS in a Virtual Machine, it
seems to read the CD but then the cursor flies all over the screen like the
video was out of sync.
I have uninstalled Virtual PC and reinstalled.
The CD will boot from the notebook OK

I have tried to use the OS CD that came with the notebook - it seems to read
the CD but the cursor just sits flashing in the top Lefthand corner.

I haven't seen this problem, but your install will go *much faster* and
cleaner if you rip your XP CD media into an .iso file using any CD
burner software (Roxio, Nero, etal) or WinISO. You can attach the ISO
as virtual media and boot the VM from it.
