After increasing the size of the virtual hard drive, you must resize the
partion used by C:\ with a program like Partition Magic or doing a
Backup/Restore with an imaging disk software like Ghost.

By itself, increasing the size of the VHD won't change the size of the
formated partition C:
Another solution would be to create a second partition on the increased vhd
or even better, to use a second VHD as supplemental storage for your
virtualized OS; by putting the
