How to designate CD as a writeable device?

Hello,

I am attempting to write audio files to a CD so that I can convert them back
to MP3 files using a ripper I have on hand.

My virtual Windows 98 machine tells me that I can't do this because my
device needs to be a, "CD-R" device.

Trust me, it is. And then some.

What do I need to do to make it work?

It can't be done unless it's a parallel port CDRW drive.

VPC only emulates certain hardware, and the CD drive emulated in VPC is not
write capable.

Microsolutions has specialized in backwardly compatible cdrw's that have a
parallel port cable and a pass through. I highly recommend them. They are
specially designed for compatibility with legacy hardware and have usb ports
as well.

You could try Audio Record Wizard
http://www.nowsmart.com/arwizard/index.html

It simply records the audio you're playing to a format, including MP3.
I used it to convert some AAC files I bought from Apple's Music Store
to MP3s.

I'm not so sure I would recommend that, parallel CD writers have proven
problematic for me in the past, even when running them on a dedicated
machine, much less a VM. Maybe if you could borrow one from someone to see
if it would work for you?
